How Much Is Enough?
Author: Mary Beth Lang

Are you a “striver”? I use the word striver to describe someone who spends a great deal of thought, time and energy in getting more of something. It may be someone who strives to look younger and more attractive. It may be someone who is driven to obtain more credentials after their name, or a more impressive title. Maybe it’s someone who wants to make more money, get a fancy sports car, or upgrade to a bigger and better house. What is the predominant thing that you are seeking or striving for?

I am not saying that striving is good or bad. Passion, desire, and visions of bigger and better things provide many people with a great amount of energy. Striving can make life fun and meaningful. People often become driven by the love of the challenge, and the game of acquisition, achievement or perfection. Such drive is also responsible for a great amount of innovation and progress. If you love how you are leading your life, then the title question is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter how much, because all the fun is in the pursuit rather than in the attainment.

On the other hand, there are people who crave “more,” and are always looking for something to fill a void (usually unconsciously). If you are unable to answer the question “How much is enough?”, then you may be one of these people. In fact, there may never be “enough” until you go inward and finally comprehend that you are really okay just as you are. This isn’t logical understanding, but emotional understanding.

Other people find that constant striving is stressful, more like a burden, rather than exhilarating. This is another sign that maybe your goals really aren’t your own, but rather are externally prompted. You may be trying to live up to your parent’s or your spouse’s ideal. You may be trying to live up to society’s version of success or perfection. Constant restlessness and dissatisfaction is very tiring. If you are having a very hard time getting what you want, or enjoying the fruits of your labor, then you may not be going after what you really want.

You may think that what you really want isn’t good enough. You know what? It is good enough. No one is living your one and only life, but you! Somewhere inside, you do have the courage to be the one and only you there will ever be. What is the first thing you are willing to let go of? What goal will fill the space? Or, maybe you’ll just choose to enjoy the space. Either way, it is okay.
