The Inner Reality of Selfhood
Author: Rev. William Duby

When man comes to see himself as he is rather than how he supposedly thinks he should be to please others, he will enter into the psychic space of his subconscious mind and exercise the power necessary to become himself like no other. Until then, he will suffer greatly because he continues to imbibe the inventions of others. He will be held in a paradigm of fantasy, foolishly thinking he's something that he's not, lying to himself and others, trying to improve himself and his situation by manipulating the e nvironment of people, places and things. What man needs to do for psychological maturity and physical well being is purge from his mind the mentality causing him to damn himself and the others he truly would like to love for Christ sake. Will he do it? Not until he has to do it. When will he have to do it? When the old way of thinking doesn't work for him any longer. When will that be? When he is sick and tired of being sick and tired. When he is finished with suffering he will surrender to the truth that will set him into the freedom to exercise his innate power to liberate his "stuck" energy. As he is released he will learn to be the greatest person he can be because it is unto his highest good to do so.

Ernest Holmes said, "To suppose that the Creative Intelligence of the Universe would create man in bondage and leave him bound, would be to dishonor the Creative Power which we call God. To suppose that God would make man as an individual, without leaving him to discover himself, would be to suppose an impossibility. Individuality must be spontaneous; it can never be automatic. The seed of freedom must be planted in the inner most being of man, but, like the Prodigal Son, man must make the great discovery f or himself.

We see abundance in the Universe. We cannot count the grains of sand on a single beach. The earth contains untold riches, and the very air is vibrant with power. Why, then, is man weak, poor and afraid? The Science of Mind deals with these questions. The Divine Plan is one of Freedom; bondage is not God-ordained. Freedom is the birthright of every living soul. All instinctively feel this. The Truth points to freedom, under Law. Thus the inherent nature of man is forever seeking to express itself in terms of freedom. We do well to listen to this Inner Voice, for it tells us of a life wonderful in its scope; of a love beyond our fondest dream; of a freedom which the soul craves.

But the great Love of the Universe must be One with the great law of Its Own Being, and we approach Love through Law. This, then, is the teaching: Love and Law. As the love of God is perfect, so the law of God also is perfect. We must understand both."

We have heard repeatedly through different religious persuasions that man must be reborn. What does that mean? Well, to begin with, man is more than an animal with a certain quality of magnetism. He must identify with the truth about himself. Not only intellectually but actually take it to heart by talking the talk and walking the walk. When he does he will be glad he did. Until then, he'll be sad he didn't.

Man is a Divine Perfect Spiritual Being at core reality. He is a radiant Spirit and it is the task of his Creative Intelligence to bring him to the light of this reality. When he actually accepts this truth he is at ease, easy on himself and easy on others. He's enlightened when it counts, in regard to himself in relationship to the Universal renown. When ignorant, he will waste his time, money and energy trying to escape the inevitable need to face himself. He will run to and fro, very much like a dog chas ing his tail, trying like hell to get the many others to see in him what he refuses to see in himself for well being.

What man seeks is seeking him. What he is trying to run away from already has a hold on him. Man is born for heaven because man is a radiant Spirit from heaven. He may not act like it because he's lost his way. He's sown to the animal flesh instead of the animated Spirit. In the beginnings of his earthly existence he is to a large extent ignorant of this fact. When he becomes older and wiser he begins to recognize his inner urges of seeking a union with the Universal Mind. This is to say, if he's smart. If not, he will be led to the meeting of His Maker anyway. The Universal Mind is paternal by nature. It is impersonal Law. It doesn't care what it takes for the man to come face to face with himself. He can fight like hell. He can die trying to escape the inescapable. He's wanted dead or alive. Once called there is no recall. He comes voluntarily or involuntarily. Like it or not, he must see himself as he is, as God Is.

Ernest Holmes said, "All men seek some relationship to the Universal Mind, the Over-Soul, or the Eternal Spirit, which we call God. And Life reveals itself to whomever is receptive to it. That we are living in a spiritual Universe, which includes the material or physical universe, has been a conclusion of the deepest thinkers of every age. That this spiritual Universe must be one of pure Intelligence and perfect Life, dominated by Love, by Reason and by the power to create, seems an inevitable conclusion.

There is a Power in the Universe that honors our faith in It; there is a Law in the Universe which exacts the "uttermost farthing." We all wish to feel that the power behind everything is good, as well as creative, an Eternal and Changeless Intelligence, in which man lives and moves and has his being. Intuitively, we sense that every man, in his native state, is some part or manifestations of this Eternal Principle; and that the entire problem of limitation, evil, suffering, and uncertainty is not God-ordai ned, but is the result of ignorance. It has been written that the Truth shall make us free, provided we know the Truth, and we note that the evolution of man's consciousness brings with it the acquisition of new powers and higher possibilities.

We find ourselves torn by confusion, by conflict, by affirmation and denial, by emotion congested by fear, congealed by pride. We are afraid of the Universe in which we live, suspicious of people around us, uncertain of the salvation of our own souls. All these things negatively react and cause physical disorders."

When man comes to realize he is truly in need of reawakening (rebirth) he willingly responds. After all, only an idiot would deny himself the greatest of all pleasure, namely, to get to know himself better than he ever thought he or anyone else could. Those who come forth begin anew for they are renewed, regenerated and restored to well being. Coming forth to realize what they have been running away from is exactly what they have been searching for all of their life. It is amazing how they begin to arise in consciousness, learning to train themselves to see beyond first impressions by the exercise of their second sight. As they grow in the awareness of their manhood (if female -womanhood) they see clearly where they formerly saw through a dark glass. Insight is far better than hindsight. No longer do they run to and fro. They settle down into their awakening because they see it is useless to run and hide. Where they once hid in self denial they are now open to self realization. It becomes obvious to them that revelation breeds intimacy. Opening up, letting go of the defensive mask, changed their life for the good.
