PEOPLE MANAGEMENT: CHANGE OR DIE!
Author: Bill McGrane

The only thing constant in anybody's life is change. To try to remain the same in the game of life is to slowly die. And this applies to the management of today's organizations more than it ever has in the past. Communication has accelerated, and the way we learn has been made so much easier. Competition has made the marketplace not only the maximum playing field of challenge, but also the birthplace of the new organizational imperatives. We can no longer be ignorant of the value of the Soft Assets of our companies: Our People!

THE PAST IS THE FUTURE, AGAIN!
The nature of the human being does not change. Environment causes priorities to be set and acted upon, but the way humans meet challenges has never changed ... not for thousands of years. Today's generation of employees has been taught what? Your job is not guaranteed! Cooperation and networking is a required survival skill! You never will be successful doing what you don't like to do! And the biggest of all ... sacrifice is only good if it gets you what YOU want, not what the boss wants! Sounds a lot like the pioneers that built this country, doesn't it? Well, it also sounds a lot like the Grandparents of our current work force. Those folks grew up and lived during a period of dramatic change with wide sweeping challenges to survival and well being. This generation of worker, as molded by downsizings, global labor sourcing, and technology driven job performance explosions has been taught that it is not easy to find good jobs. Because of this, these workers are very determined, a high percentage driven to be independent minded about their skills, and strongly believe that work, play, and learning are all supposed to be fun.

COOPERTITION, AND THE INTRAPRENEUR!
The old ideas of "We Versus They" are wasteful. The only thing of importance is the form of organization. Does it allow the flexibility to be competitive in today's marketplace? Can it expand and contract at will, without creating employee pain? Does it automatically create the future? Coopertition! Can we make our competitive urges work for us through cooperation? You are great at building technical bridges for the communication between machines throughout major corporations. I am a communications company that builds understanding between people of wide ranges of experience, training, and interests. We are in competition because our target consumer thinks we are. But we really are not. We should be working together. Why?
So, what about Coopertition? Well, do you, as a technical communication company have the skills to create people understanding? The kind of understanding that makes an accounting department understand your technical communication from distribution and manufacturing? Does Marketing and Business Acquisition Services understand the worth of the technical communications from the Personnel Department? What if you did have those capabilities because we decided to be cooperative, rather than competitive? Coopertition! The client company benefits through growth via totally improved communications, not just machine or human communications, but both together.

What if an employee wants to be independent, an entrepreneur? Instead of leaving the organization, why not become sponsored by it and become an intrapreneur. Now, instead of competition, and the increased costs that creates, we have Coopertition. How does this happen? Communications!

COMMUNICATION!
At McGrane we are very active assisting all types of organizations improve their abilities to compete within the world market of today and eliminate business stagnation problems. We have worked on the people communication problems and challenges created by Acquisitions, Business Expansion, Distribution Category Expansion, Internal Cooperation, etc., etc. Almost never have we found the problems that were causing the business stagnation problem to be lack of knowledge. On the contrary, the biggest stagnation problems were often within the most intelligent organizations. The biggest problem ... COMMUNICATION!

The boss isn't always right! The customer is no longer the most important part of your company .... REALLY! Leadership isn't doing what everybody says you should do, but doing something just so your team will react and fix your mistakes! Flexible teams are great, but only if rules exist so decisions can be made and followed! But how are you supposed to manage a profit driven business with the current attitudes of today's workforce?

PLAY THE GAME!
Remember the thrill of learning something so well that you became a champion? Maybe you never got the chance! But you should have! Ever hear of an apprentice that failed? Have you ever heard of anyone who completed an apprentice style of training that was not highly competent in their field? Did you know the most successful companies in almost all areas of business challenge follow some form of apprentice training? No matter where we have put one of our modified, Soft Asset Management apprentice programs in place the results have been amazing. Why? Communications are no longer vague. Success is clearly described. The steps to achieve it, given the necessary flexibility to be owned by the apprentice and the ability to create independent action is learned.

CHANGE OR DIE!
The writing is on the wall!
When an employee says "Hello!" to a customer, that is your product's perceived quality .. no matter what you sell.
If you do not have a marketing plan also directed at your employees, you are in great danger in today's marketplace.
Your future is a choice, which way do you want to go?
