Empowerment Thinking Going from Negative to Positive Self Dialogue
Author: Paul B. Schlosberg

Each day of our lives, each of us have choices to make, and these choices, whether we know it or not, affect the course of our lives. But on a more subtle level, we are actually making choices each moment, by choosing the thoughts we have. Those momentary choices, to a great degree will determine how are lives become in body and in mind.

Mind/Body body medicine teaches that many diseases are, in essence and in varying degrees, psychosomatic in nature. What that means is that our mental state, or frame of mind, can change the way that our bodies feel and the overall health of our bodies and vice-versa. For example, an asthma attack, which is commonly thought medically to be some type of allergic reaction, also can be brought on by stress and anxious thoughts.

What we can do to empower ourselves and to begin to change the state of our health and the quality of our life is to change our thinking from negative to positive - moment by moment.

Ask yourself, what good will it do for me to be down on myself or down about life. All things being equal in our lives, even if no other external factors were changed, such as job satisfaction, health, marriage, our children’s lives, material possession’s we have acquired, etc, what possible good can there be in remaining in a run-down state of mind! None. It won’t help change anything. So by changing our thoughts we automatically improve the quality of our lives immediately, and in a substantial way!

Positive self-dialogue becomes powerful when we do it in such a way as to be compassionate toward ourselves. When we use compassionate and positive self-talk we become empowered rather than depressed or anxious. Another point to remember is that it’s also good not to be too extreme when creating this inner dialogue, because it won’t be believable. For example instead of going from a negative dialogue of “I’m too fat” to “I am beautiful, I look like Christy Brinkley”. Find a less extreme, more realistic alternative such as “Yes I am a bit overweight, but I have lost 10 pounds and improving weekly”, or something similar.

Following are some examples of common negative thoughts and possible positive replacements.

Negative Thought: “I’ve never done anything extraordinary, I’m just average.”

Positive Replacement: “I contribute on a regular basis, by getting up each day and doing something constructive. I ‘m diligent when I could be lazy. Because of this I have above average character.”

Negative Thought: “I keep trying but never seem to be able to do the right thing.”

Positive Replacement: “Hey, I am a little too hard on myself. I ‘ve done a lot of smaller but important things well. I just need to focus on and magnify those things, rather than dwell on the negative stuff. I have kept trying and because of that I have developed real depth as a human being.”

Negative Thought: “What’s the point, I’m too old, it’s too late to change, it doesn’t matter anyway.”

Positive Replacement: “Hey, everybody has felt this way at some time or other, whether they admit to it or not. There have been many great people who have succeeded later in thier life in various things. What do I care what other people think anyway. I know I have passion for life, so I am intent to enjoy the rest of my life, do well and go for it!.”

Negative Thought: “I am lacking in energy”

Positive Replacement: “True I have been feeling a bit sluggish lately, but I also have been staying up too late, burning the candle at both ends and not eating well. I am going to really take care to see that I am living well and taking better care of myself this week”

By using these on a regular basis, the transformation of the thought process will be amazing!
