Cold Calling: The Andy Warhol Way Author: Daniel Arenzon
If you make cold calls, one of the most effective ways to warm up your telephone calls is by calling on leads in the business section of newspapers. Why? Most people are busy and do not take the time to look up these phone numbers. This means more opportunity to prospect in an untapped market and provides you an outlet to increase your contact, callback and closing ratios. Why wouldn`t these professionals take your call? I mean, who doesn`t like being recognized? We all want our 15 minutes of stardom right? Andy Warhol`s most famous words were, "In the future everybody will be famous for 15 minutes."
When you make strategic cold calls from the newspaper you are now increasing your chances of speaking to the decision maker. Can you think of a better way to break the ice on an initial cold call? Here`s an example, every business newspaper has a "People On The Move Section" and many of these business professionals who are profiled may not even know that they made the paper. In many cases, the company`s PR Department or hired PR Agency may have submitted it for them. So when you call and introduce yourself, they may say something like, "Really, I`m in the paper? I didn`t even realize they would put my picture in so quick." I would now take this opportunity and offer to send their picture to them. Why? Because once they accept they will feel obligated to listen to you. Smart? You bet!
Here are a few more suggestions
Try calling professionals who have been quoted.
Try calling professionals who have their picture in the paper.
Try calling business professionals listed in advertisements in the paper (people will at leas be happy that people are noticing their ad!).
If you are concerned that someone has been called, call them in a few weeks rather than the current week in which they were featured or profiled.
Try different opening lines like, "I`m trying to reach the Moviestar Jason Jacobsohn?" Make it Fun!
Try other opening lines, "I didn`t expect you to even take my call?" They will respond, "Why is that?" You can make a joke and say, "I thought you would be out signing autographs!" They will laugh and this now gives you a smooth entry to the reason why you are calling.
Great ideas? Absolutely! Try this idea in your local business newspaper or even industry publication. Congratulations, you have now elevated yourself to a level of unique positioning and opportunity. Don`t tell anyone our little cold calling secret ok?
