The Essential Vitamin "C's" for sales people

As we celebrate Thanksgiving and head toward the end of the year, we are well aware that this is not only the Christmas season, but the flu season as well. Many people consider Vitamin C the secret weapon not only to combat the cold, but prevent it as well. We drink orange juice, eat citrus fruits and take vitamin C tablets, lozenges, gum and other consumable forms by the hoard. Many people have stretched this seasonal habit and made it daily as a continual safeguard to prevent sickness. Certainly this is wise habit to build when considering taking care of yourself physically.

Imagine for a moment a vitamin C “pill” that you could consume daily to effectively combat the various “viruses, flu, and colds” that so readily and regularly attack sales people on a non-stop basis. How much would you pay for a crystallized and convenient form of “vitamin C” that effectively fought off call reluctance, fears, insecurity, self defeating doubts, pessimism, pissed off customers, and prospects cold as ice? What ever it cost, you would buy it wouldn’t you? How would such a solution impact your ability to add value and vitality to yourself and every prospective customer in your path? It would not only change your career, but your life as well.

Many sales people have spent their whole career searching for such a pill and have come up empty. The good news today for you is that your search is over! The formula has been discovered. In fact, this formula has always existed, has never failed a patient and has never shown any negative side effects. The more it is consumed, the more effective it becomes. It exists in every store, every home, and every business, on every street and in any country during any season. By now you’re asking yourself, “Where is it?” “How do I get some immediately?” The truth is that many know the formula, but few actually consume it because of one small issue: The cost. Despite being within every person’s budget, few will pay the steep price. You say, “Wow, what is that expensive yet so effective in fighting the flu of sales people”? The ingredients are not new or revolutionary and were not developed in a lab. In fact, I am sure you have heard them before. The three ingredients are charting the course, consistent activity and character that counts.

Charting the Course: Imagine planning a crossing of the Pacific Ocean to Asia on a sailing voyage. Prior to your departure, you would take many provisions and precautions to insure a safe and reliable voyage. One of those would certainly include charting your course. Every minute and move would be tracked and thought out in order to arrive at the correct destination in a safe and timely manner. Without this, your chances of running aground or self-destructing against other objects would certainly be very high.

How many people set sail every day seeking career direction and ultimately success with a carefully thought out and charted course? Do you really know what you want and what obstacles stand in your way threatening to shipwreck your success? When it comes to seeking a career, do you have a good grasp on the real job? Who is the decision maker? How will you be measured and evaluated? How do the customers see the company? Too many sales people jump on their speedboat and rip out of the harbor into open waters not knowing what course they are on. It is no wonder that too many people become lost and shipwrecked in the sea of sales. Proper course charting is the only measure one can take in order to ride out the storms and arrive at the planned destination.

Consistency: Vitamin C is most effective when taken on a consistent basis as a part of a regular diet, not taken on a binge basis after a sickness has developed. The same principle applies to career success, whether you are searching for a new career, building a business or growing in an existing position. How many people work really hard for one day or week, have some success resulting in a big commission and take the next few days or weeks off because they “deserve it”? Conversely, how many people work 15 hour days, weekends, birthdays and anniversaries when things are not going well hoping to make up a bad month, quarter or year burning themselves and their families out in the process? This pattern of reactive inconsistency in activity results in inconsistent production, unpredictable success, bad health and a bad attitude. The common cure for this disease is consistent activity. Set goals and plans that are realistic yet challenging; work your plan consistently and don’t let temporary success or failure change your habits. Don’t coast after a sale and don’t panic and become a workaholic during the tough times. The key to success is consistency. Have a great attitude and apply reasonable, planned and consistent activity; the results will come.

Character that counts: This is the most important ingredient in the sales person’s vitamin C tablet. Solid character is what empowers you to chart the proper course and develop consistent disciplines necessary to stay on course. Character is what allows you to be true to yourself, your values, your mission, your customers and those around you. It allows you to see beyond missed opportunities, bad deals, sour circumstances and other challenges that constantly linger. It also allows you to keep your ego and greed in check during the harvest of the fall season when it is time to cash in. It will insure that opportunity will always be near although often unseen. Your customers and co-workers will see you and value you in ways reserved for very few. Don’t let disappointment, disaster and distress disqualify you from the prize, which in the important race, is the prize not reserved for the winners, but the finishers.
