Heir to the King....
Author: Puneet Tiwari

Every off and on, the marketing divas have been advocating effective customer relationship as the best means towards succeccsul marketing portfolio. However, this idea, though seems rational, lacks a few ground realities. The idea here is not to contradict what is already said and published, but to suuplement the approach with a fresh angle.

In the FMCG parlance, firms in India usually operate on a distributor-supplier-retailer structure. This means that a product traverses from the company's depots to the distributors who are appointed by the company itself on a regional basis or as the need may be.Each distributor is supplying to a number of retail outlets as well as wholesale suppliers who in turn suply to the retailers alongwith individual customers. In this way these middlemen help the product towards most esteemed customers. This process seems very smooth as on papers but certain malpractices have crept in which result in losses to the company and hamper its objective of making customer a king.

One of the most important part of the structure is the point of sale or the retail outlet where the customers purchase their products. Most of th FMCGs entrust their distributors and consider their responsibility only upto manufacturing and transporting it. Now it is left to those handful of distributors to distribute the product according to their free will. Hence the customers never get into real touch with the company.

Another practice which has caught up is to grab various promotional schemes provided by the company for the retailers or customers, for that matter. Ineffective communication on part of companies with lousy attitude of managers may at times leave a naive retailer or an uninformed customer dissatisfied.

At times this skullduggery amounts to the extent of a supplier refusing a company's products. Rather, it prefers the competitor's products with better management in place.
It is therefore high time when the companies should identify the retailer as the heir to the so called "King".
