Fitting Meditation into your Daily Routine
Author: Ali Sharifi

Do you feel like you’re too busy to meditate? Can’t find a block of time to sit down for some deep relaxation? Well, I’m here to tell you it’s very possible to fit meditation into your daily routine, regardless of how busy you are. You see, contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to have super long meditation sessions to enjoy the benefits of meditation. I’ll teach you how to utilize the little time you have to the fullest.

The first thing to note is that there are a million and one ways to meditate. For this reason, you can easily find a meditation that is one minute in length or ten hours. Also, a good number of meditations are not time-based. By this I mean that you can do the meditation for as long as it suits you. If after ten minutes you get tired or bored, you can simply stop. There are some meditations that are a bit more structured, guiding you to a certain place and therefore it is best if you can do these meditations in their entirety.

Having said that, we’ll be focusing on some meditations that can be done anywhere, at any time, for as long as you like. One of the most basic meditations is one that I always talk about and teach, which is focusing on your breath. I’d like you to do this meditation now. It will only take a minute. You’re making the time to read this article, so I know you can spare an extra minute on this meditation. Just read the next paragraph completely first, and then do the meditation.

Find a comfortable spot to sit or lie down. Close your eyes and take a deep breath through your nose, making sure that your stomach rises as you inhale. Exhale through your mouth and repeat this two to three times. Then continue to breathe normally through your nose and just become aware of your breathing. As thoughts enter your mind, acknowledge them and release them by refocusing your attention on your breathing. It’s very natural for thoughts to pop into your head. As you continue to breathe and relax, keep refocusing your thoughts and attention on your breathing. Feel the air entering your lungs and your stomach rising. Focus on your breath. Try this for a minute. When you’re ready to end this meditation, take a deep breath and open your eyes.

Go ahead and do this meditation now.

That’s it! That was meditation. Wasn’t so hard was it? And you did it in just one minute. Now I would be lying if I said that this meditation would not be more beneficial if you did it for say 10 minutes or 30 minutes, but that is difficult for some people to do. You are still getting the countless benefits from meditation with this 1-minute version though, so start there and see where that leads you.

Here’s another meditation that can be done easily throughout your day. You actually do this meditation while you walk! This is perfect for a walk of any length. Whether you’re going outside to get the mail or walking to your next class or even doing a walkathon, this meditation is a perfect addition to your repertoire. Read the paragraph below and when you’re ready for a walk, simply follow the “steps”.

As you begin walking, I’d like you to focus your attention on your feet. I don’t mean that you should look at your feet. Please don’t look down while you’re walking as you’re bound to run into something that is guaranteed to be harder than your head! What I mean is that as you take each step, feel your feet hitting the floor. Feel the sensation in your toes and feet. Feel the texture of the floor beneath you. Be fully aware of every step, while at the same time paying attention to where you’re walking. As thoughts pop into your head, and they will, simple refocus your thoughts on each step you take. Continue to do this until you get to where you need to go. Undoubtedly, you’ll be walking for a while suddenly realizing that you were swept away with a though and no longer focusing on your steps. That is completely all right and natural. Just go back to focusing on each step again.

Now that you have two meditations in your back pocket, you may be saying, “How do I fit these into my day?” Well, let’s look at two made up scenarios:

Scenario 1: Julie Corporatewoman wakes up at 6:00 AM to start her day. While she’s still in bed, she does one or two minutes of the breath meditation. She gets up, showers, grabs a bagel and runs out the door, hitting her knee on the end table on her way out. A couple of hours into her workday, she decides to do the breath meditation again while sitting in her comfy leather chair. Five minute later, she feels great and is ready to tackle the rest of her day. At lunch, she walks to her favorite café two blocks away, and does the walking meditation most of the way there and back. She gets home and her husband has made her a wonderful dinner (Pizza Hut to the rescue!) and she decides to take a quick shower, again doing the breath meditation for a few minutes while in the shower. She’s ready to go to sleep and gets cozy in bed, where yet again she does the breath meditation. She feels so good about herself that things begin to click naturally in her life. She becomes president of her company and her husband learns how to cook.

Scenario 2: Jerry Collegeguy wakes up at 9:15 AM to the sound of his roommate’s new stereo system. He remembers he took a shower three days ago, so skips that in order to make more time for an extra cup of coffee before classes. He walks to class, doing the walking meditation the whole way. As he is going to each class throughout his day, he tries to do the walking meditation as often as he can remember. After his last class, he goes home to realize his roommate has painted the apartment dark blue to match how he was feeling that day. Jerry locks himself in his room and does the breath meditation for half an hour, feeling great and ready to deal with his roommate. After he solves that ordeal, he realizes he has a test the next day to cram for and after a couple hours of studying, he goes outside and walks for a few minutes, doing the walking meditation. He of course aces his test and goes on to become a world-renowned ambassador, bringing on world peace.

These were dramatizations for your amusement, but the point I’m making is that if you choose to incorporate meditation in your life, there is plenty of opportunity. It doesn’t matter how little or how much time you have, you can fit meditation into your daily routine.

So, what are you still doing here? Go Meditate!
