The day I turned thirty, I decided to start a publishing company. I had no knowledge of business in general or publishing in particular. I had no money, no rich friends, and no relatives with any cash to spare. I had no job, no income, and no assets. I had been an actor until our company fell apart. Then I was a musician until our band fell apart. Then I turned thirty, and went into shock. I wasn’t a kid anymore.
Before I knew it I was thirty-five and ,000 in credit card debt and on the brink of bankruptcy. By the time I was forty I was a millionaire. What changed in those ten years? Nothing out there in the outer world changed; there were no more or no fewer opportunities or problems. The only thing that changed was within my mind, in my thought processes. I learned how to go beyond my limiting poverty consciousness and more into a much more expansive state of mind.
I learned how to become aware of my deep core beliefs, and realized I had a conflicting mass of beliefs, many of them negative and limiting. I believed life is a struggle, it’s hard to succeed, money doesn’t grow on trees, and money corrupts. I learned something about our beliefs: They are not true in themselves, but if we believe them, they become true in our experience.
I grew to realize a lot of other people have a very different set of beliefs than I do and, best of all, I found I can change my beliefs. It’s not that difficult, but it does take work. First of all, we have to become conscious of our beliefs. Then we have to consciously change them. The process requires becoming aware of every thought we have, at every moment. Once we can do that, we can change our habitual thinking.
I looked at it as literally reprogramming my mind. When I would think, “This is really hard, this is a big problem,” I would catch myself thinking that and insert a new program. I would think, “In an easy and relaxed manner, in a healthy and positive way, I see opportunities everywhere.”
Take a look at your deep core beliefs. They are reflected in your thoughts, words, and actions. These kinds of questions can get to the root of things: Do you believe life is a struggle? Do you believe there is a scarcity of money, time, or energy? Do you believe it’s really hard to succeed? Do you believe deep down that you’re lacking some crucial ingredient for success?
I have come to see and believe that once we set our endlessly creative minds in the right direction, there are no obstacles that can’t be overcome. And setting this direction is simply a matter of focusing on our goals, affirming them, making a plan, and taking the first obvious steps. All the other things we thought were essential for success don’t matter. You don’t need money. You don’t need a lot of intelligence. You don’t need experience; you don’t need a college education. All you need to do is focus your mind on your goal, and ask your creative subconscious mind what the next steps are that you need to take toward the goal.
That’s the secret of success, in a nutshell: Have a clear goal in mind and persist. James Allen put it this way, in As You Think, one of my favorite inspirational books: “You will become a great as your dominant aspiration. If you cherish a vision, a lofty ideal in your heart, you will realize it.”
