Create The Happiness Habit

What does it mean to be happy? What is this incessant
running after happiness? What is happiness? Happiness is a
state of mind. As Abraham Lincoln said, "You can make
yourself about as happy as you make up your mind to be."

Every state in the United States is different. Hawaii is
different from Wyoming. Yet each has its own special
beauty. Imagine traveling by car from Florida to
California. You will travel along interstate 10 and pass
through about seven states along the way. Texas is
different from both Florida and California.

Your awareness can also travel and move from state
of mind to state of mind. For example you can move
your awareness into your left thumb.

Feel the sensations within your left thumb. A moment
ago, your consciousness was not in your left thumb.
You can also bring your awareness into the soles of your
feet. It is my contention that happiness exists within you.

It is a fundamental location-a state of being. If you are
not feeling your happiness right now, it is a simple matter
to move your awareness. If you don't like Florida, you can
move to Texas, California, New Mexico, or any other state.
You are not a tree! You are not stuck! And neither is your
awareness. When you finish this email, take 7 minutes to
find your happiness. Most people feel it within in their
chests, near their heart. Follow these steps:

1. Sit up straight, and prepare to concentrate.
2. Exhale and then take a full deep breath inhalation.
(Most people are shallow breathers, and it's hard to be happy when your
brain is being forced to survive on small amounts of air.)
3. Take a minute and recall some happy times in your life.
If you've never had a happy moment, then create one now in
your imagination.
4. Expand and increase this inner happiness for one minute.

Now throughout this day, reconnect to this inner happiness.
Think happy thoughts as often as possible. Breathe deeply
whenever you think to do so and follow this deep breathing
with happy thoughts. Here's a technique I use. Whenever I
hear somebody gossip or gripe, I use that as an opportunity
to awaken to my own happiness. I take these negatives and
turn them into a positive for me. Happiness is a habit. You
are training yourself to automatically live with more
happiness. Start today to create the happiness habit. Do
what you can to bring some happiness into your office or
home. Anything, just make the effort, no matter how small.
