The Smile of Gratitude

The gift of the smile - The faculty of direct expression from the heart is truthfully reflected in the eyes of the giver.

I assisted with rounding up of ostriches in a camp on a nature reserve when a young ostrich accidentally ran into a fence and seriously injured himself. He was gushed from the lower part of his neck down to his chest and was unable to stand.

At distant places like this reserve, the only option would be to put the injured youngster out of his misery, as his chances on survival would be very slim.

As I approach the youngster, preparing for the inevitable, his smile caught me completely off guard. Not only was his smile reflected in his eyes, but also the keen look he gave me, demonstrated a spirit of courage and hope. This convinced me to give him a chance.

Back at the main center of the reserve, I made the youngster comfortable in a shelter and started treating his wounds. He would lie with his neck stretched out and the only response was a click with his beak.

He started eating only after the third day and managed to sit after a week. How he struggled to stand! But he kept on trying, every day, until he managed to stand with my support. Since then, his recovery was amazing.

It was easy to grow fond of his friendly and stunning smile he used to greet us with on every visit. He never stopped smiling during his recovery period of about 2 months and won the heart of everybody.

I firmly believe that his amazingly quick recovery was due to his Smile – The Smile of Gratitude.

I hope he inspires you and brings you joy with his smile as he has done for me over these years.
