Leveraging Your 'Incidents of Coincidence'

Do you believe that everything happens for a reason? Alec really didn’t until his life totally changed. At 21, his plans didn’t include going to war. But he had gone and finally he had been sent home.

And then an incident took place that changed his life.

Late one night, around 3:00 a.m., Alec was returning home and saw soldiers pounding on his front door looking for him. It had been barely a month since his release but they needed him. The war was now looming in Yugoslavia. His back still hurting Alec panicked - frightened, he hid until they were gone. Running into his house, he found his father talking on the phone. His uncle from New York City had just called. At that moment they made a decision – Alec had to leave or he was going to be taken away by the soldiers. The next day, Alec was on a flight to New York.

While in Serbia, Alec had attended college, as a skilled violinist. It had been two years since he had picked up a violin. When he did - he found that his playing was greatly marred by his lack of practice. What was he going to do?

Knowing of Alec’s great love for the violin, his uncle contacted a friend in the Upper West Side and paid him to give Alec two private lessons. Impressed by his skill, his teacher, Paul, told Alec that he wanted him to play for someone that he knew. Not knowing the importance of the audition and without knowing what an incredible opportunity this was, Alec played confidently without any sign of nervousness. Two weeks later, Alec was given a scholarship for the famous Julliard School of Music! Paul’s friend happened to be the Dean of the String Program at Julliard and apparently was as impressed with Alec’s talent as was Paul!

As a member of the Julliard orchestra, Alec performed in a bi-annual competition for Kurt Masur, the director of the NY Philharmonic and one of the most renowned conductors of our day. Had Alec not escaped Serbia when he did, his future would have included time spent in foxholes. Instead, Alec found himself in orchestra pits throughout Washington, DC and New York City, including the prestigious one in Carnegie Hall.

Alec grew up surrounded by a love of music. Circumstances, coincidences and incredible talent worked together to turn his love into a dream come true!
