Life is littered with trespasses--ours and those against us. The ones for concern are those that lodge in us and metastasize.

Hurts haunt. Suffering and loss are often indelible. September 11, any time when wrong or tragedy touches us directly or indirectly, can’t be forgotten.

But for survival’s sake, suffering has to work toward forgiveness. Not pardoning wrong, but separating the hurting heart from protracted resentment against the offender.

Anger, even hate, may still be felt. Salvation is in avoiding, as much as possible, feeling persistent ill will against the perpetrator.

It’s very hard. But the alternative is having the present and future tainted, maybe destroyed. Forgiveness is reconciliation with the past.
