Top 5 Tips for Being Fulfilled
Author: Steve Errey

1. Be You
Being you is just that - being you, no matter what is expected of you. It’s taking all that you are – your values, beliefs, talents, skills and passions – and making them live in the real world. Being you is not about living your life according to the roles that the world expects of you, moving from one to the other with no clear direction or focus, and without being true to yourself.

When you understand the roles you adopt in your life, and get more familiar the person you are at your very core, you can make choices that will remove the things blocking your path and allow you to be truly you. Being you is the key to being fulfilled.

2. Live Your Values
Values are vital in terms of being you and are at the very core of who we are. Values are all the things in ourselves, others and the world that are most important to us, such as respect, fun, tolerance and even qualities like open spaces. They’re the parts of the world that we value.

Once you understand what your values are you’re then in a position to make choices around them. You’re able to start living according to them. Honouring your values (the things most important you) is the best way to being fulfilled.

For example, imagine you’re in a tricky decision making process and aren’t sure where to turn - the decision that most honours your values will be the best choice for you in the long term, even though it may be the hardest choice in the short term. Because the choice is based on your values, it’s going to feel right and will be the choice that gives you most fulfillment.

3. Have a Goal and Move Towards It
We set goals so that we have something to work towards, something that will inspire us to take action and to get something different in life. Goals help us to keep focused on what’s important and in order to reach our goals there must be something compelling or exciting about them, otherwise what’s the point in exerting effort to reach them?

Goals need to be about what we want to move towards rather than what we don’t want. Too often we spend out time thinking about what we don’t want – we don’t want to worry about money, we don’t want to feel so tired, we don’t want to argue with our partner. These are all about moving away from something - they’re about stopping this, cutting that out and reducing that. A simple switch from moving away from something to moving towards something makes a huge difference when it comes to achieving your goals.

4. Nourishment
There’s always so much going on in our lives that sometimes we forget the important stuff. We’re all busily getting on with things, dealing with everything that life hands us and moving towards something better. When things are particularly stressful or tough it gets even easier to forget the most important thing - ourselves. You know what it’s like when you don’t take care of yourself – you feel demotivated, it’s tough to get out of bed, you may end up with a cold, or you just feel like life is happening to you. It’s vital that you do things to take care of yourself. Think about the things in your life that give you a feeling of nourishment - the things that feel good way down inside. Make time for them and make time for you - you’re the only one of you there is.

5. Commitment
Having a goal is meaningless unless you’re committed to achieving it. It’s like having a flashy red sports car when you can’t even drive. Commitment is a way of behaving, a way of being, that will drive you towards your goal. Whereas goals are specific and noticeable, commitment is less so.

Commitment comes from different places, but by far the best place is out of a genuine want to see the goal realised and to reap the rewards that it will bring. Doing things that we honestly want inspires us to see them through, because we recognise how much we want them and know how things will be when we’re done. Whatever you want, make a commitment to move towards it and follow through with that commitment.
