Leadership Development

New York State Training Council
Leadership Development Day

by Fritz Scherz, Professional Training Specialist
Office of the NYS Comptroller

The Leadership Development Day (LDD) was held on February 4, 2003 at the Department of Taxation & Finance in Latham, NY. This training was for New York State Training Council (NYSTC) Committee members. Chris Rush and Fritz Scherz from the Professional Development Unit at the Office of the NYS Comptroller attended. Both are actively involved in the training field. Chris is Co-Chairperson of the NYSTC Technology Committee, while Fritz is Chairperson of the NYSTC Leadership Development Committee. Fritz is also the NYSTC Mentor-Protégé Program Coordinator. In addition, Fritz is a member of the Hudson-Mohawk Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development.

Some of the objectives of this program were to enhance teambuilding, increase communication skills, and to encourage attendees to assume additional responsibility in the committee they’re on and/or to run for Executive Office in the May elections. Many NYSTC committee members attended this day-long program that was presented by Abbie Ferreira from the New York State Governor’s Office of Employee Relations.

Prior to the LDD, attendees were given a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment to complete and submit. The MBTI is an effective tool in identifying common ground and/or differences with others. During the morning portion of the LDD, attendees were provided a history of the MBTI, the characteristics of each type, and learned the results of their assessment.

During the afternoon session, the implications for leadership were discussed. The facilitator used a small group exercise to demonstrate how knowledge of type can enhance group process by looking at the task of planning the Annual Institute. At the end of the day, participants were guided in creating their own leadership development plan.

Many thanks to Leadership Development Committee members who assisted in the planning of the programs: Laurie Arsenault, Karen Galarneau, Sharon Gariepy, Rebecca Kennard, and Diana McCarthy.

If anyone is interested in becoming a member of the NYSTC, please contact Fritz Scherz at: (518) 486-4355, or go to: www.nystc.org for more info.
