HOW FOCUSING ON THE POSITIVE SAVED MY LIFE

I was once driving on the expressway when my car began to skid. I immediately stepped on the brakes but that made matters worse! I began to slide across the highway and was heading straight for the barrier. Then in a flash, I remembered something I'd heard from Anthony Robbins on a tape several weeks earlier. He said, “Did you ever wonder why so many cars in accidents wind up in trees or lampposts? It's because they're aiming not to hit the street lamp. However, you cannot “not aim” towards something, because by thinking about not hitting it, you're thinking about IT. You're indirectly bringing that street lamp into the forefront of your attention, and that makes it more likely that you'll hit it. It happens all of the time! Whatever you think about, even when you're trying to get rid of that thought, is automatically in the forefront of your conscious mind. Therefore you can’t aim for avoiding the negative. You've got to aim for the positive!

So I quickly refocused my vision and aimed for the other side of the three-lane highway. Luckily, there were no other cars on the road and I was able to slide back over to the other side of the expressway without hitting anyone else's car!

It was a hard way to reinforce the lesson, but it taught me you have to stop thinking about avoiding failure and replace those thoughts with positive thoughts.

When you construct your goal, state it in a positive context. That’s what this program is all about. Aiming to achieve success, not avoiding failure.
