What Is Average?
Author: Robert Taylor

You might say that, on an average, if a person has one foot on a hot stove and the other in a bucket of ice, he is comfortable. See the fallacy in that statement?

Or, the statement saying the average family has two and a half children. What happened to the other half of a child?

What defines the average person? You can use statistics covering income, type of housing, educational level, number of children, you name it, and come up with a so-called average. The fact is none of us are average. We are all exceptional human beings.

We each have talents or skills developed to a stage no one else has reached. Our personalities and characteristics are all unique. Nobody else has the exact same physical properties we have. Our thoughts, attitudes and actions are unique in all the world.

There is always something you can do better than anyone else. You may not think so, but it is true. Dig deeply enough into yourself and you will find it. It is often the case you can do those very things others think you incapable of doing and have told you so.

When you believe what these others have told you, you severely limit yourself. Should you feel deep down you wish to accomplish or do something, do it. Don't listen to the naysayers and let them lump you in with their concept of what they consider average.

Never forget what some consider an average lifestyle many would consider magnificent. It all depends on your perspective, and that is based on what you have experienced in life and the way you choose to look at things.

At some time or another in our lives we have all been exposed to the concept of "average." Our grades in school, our appearance, our job performance were classified as average or above or below average.

Depending on the manner in which we accepted the categorization, we either let it hold us back or drive us on to greater endeavors. Looking back on those times, did we let something affect us that had little or no meaning? Does it really mean anything to be told we are average or above or below average when the "average" itself is of no value?

Perhaps it is time for us to make our own personal evaluation of "average" and the impact it has on our lives.
