"Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." --Jesus

In modern English: "Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated in the same situation."

If you act in a certain way toward another, but you're unwilling to be treated that way in the same circumstance, you violate the rule.

The Golden Rule has been called a consistency principle. It doesn't prescribe what to do. It just says be consistent, be fair. It's that simple. To understand.

To be moral, we have to have the ability to have sympathy/empathy for the other--meaning to imagine ourselves in the other person's place. We may not be able to imagine what it's like to be a fly or a frog, but we can--if we're willing--imagine being in another human being's shoes.

Let's bring this closer to home. Imagine the moral and social ground that could be gained if in the next family confrontation each party tried to be empathetic to each's place. To feel the other's position, maybe even pain.

We would progress far in finding resolution. Maybe discuss empathy as a foundation for the future.
