THE RECOVERY OF AN INTELLIGENT AND COURAGEOUS MAN

"I am not very special, though I'm generally a friendly and honest sort of person. I'm not much worse or better than the average person in the street, though if I have a drug again I will be a danger to you, to myself and to society.

"1,000 days ago, at about midday on April 15 1998 I sat in Longfield Park, Cabramatta, NSW, Australia with a handful of pills and a syringe full of a lethal shot of heroin, with a firm, serene resolve to end my own life.

"I had been a daily drug user and intermittently heavy drinker for 25 years, and a heroin addict since 1983, and I was exhausted from the evil imprisonment of addiction. I had once been a person with a fairly healthy self-esteem, but death had become preferable to living in hell.

(During the 25 drug years, Narcosis held down a full-time job, became married with family and went through all the motions of normal living).

"When I received results for a semester of a second university degree I was doing while working and using (heroin) full time, I couldn't remember the course, its lecturers, students, tutors, classrooms or content, although I had finished only weeks before.

(Narcosis, on the brink of suicide, somehow glimpsed a fragment of hope. He rose from the park bench, went home, and embarked on the nightmare road to detox and recovery).

"Through it all I was able to work. I rose at 6.30 am, worked a nine-hour day in a cold, strictly supervised office without cigarette breaks, went to an NA meeting each night, got lost going there and coming back, ate at 10.30 pm, slept five hours.

"I have lived a life of total abstinence from drugs (including alcohol) since then. How has this been possible?"
