Making Relationships Work Author: Jackie Woods
In this age of busy schedules, high pressure jobs, body fitness and refined tastes, relationships often take a chair at the back of our agendas. It isn’t usually anyone’s intent to neglect their partner, their kids or even themselves. However, neglect has a way of sneaking in and doing its damage.
So how does one manage the job, the travel, the work-out room, and the necessary shopping to have a meaningful relationship? It is true, you must dress appropriately for your station in life, and that requires time for shopping and grooming. It is also true that you need to put in the extra hours to keep your job, because that is just the way it is in Corporate America these days. There must be some other way to manage all this and a relationship besides becoming a world-famous juggler or inventing a personal time warp.
There is no simple solution, but there are some answers. The next best thing to the time warp remedy is the long distance energy connection. Don’t shake your head in disbelief. This is a real answer. The way it works is for one person of the relationship to give a name to the quality that initiates a certain activity they have on their to-do list. For example, you may choose to do your physical work-out in the gym, while your partner prefers tennis. If the quality which initiates both activities is health, then you have a common energy to connect with even if the forms are different.
To take this example further, let’s say you are focused on the health of your body and the health of your partner’s body the whole time you are working out. Of course the partner must have the same focus. This will make the energy connection even stronger. It works! The energy becomes the connection rather than the form. After all, what is it that really makes people feel connected even when they are doing the same thing? It is having the same intent and purpose in the doing. It is not the form itself.
Another basic addition to your relationship wardrobe must be joint defining. If the two of you sit down together and work out a schedule of who is to pick up the kids at what time, then you are doing this together in relationship. Even if you are going separate ways and motivated by different energy qualities, the joint definition can be the connector.
Let’s say the day your wife is to pick up the kids, you are meeting with a new client. Her quality, or energy behind her action, would probably be support. The quality motivating you to meet a new client might be the energy of expansion. When no common quality of energy is shared, even long distance, then another form of connection must be present. In this example, it is the joint definition.
If you are following this train of thought, you are beginning to see that creative connecting must be the theme of a relationship when two busy lives come together. Yes, it is a necessity that some physical space be shared, but limiting your relationship to the hours actually spent together and even throwing in the telephone calls across the miles doesn’t always add up to a big shared space.
Most everyone these days has to develop their creative thinking just to stay alive. You must think creatively to stay on top of your finances. You wouldn’t dream of settling for the same daily fare with your food. You have your own dressing style, and no doubt your home reflects the people who live there. So why shouldn’t relationships have the same creative attention? With some willingness on the part of both partners to give up their old ideas of relationship, and a little redirection of focus, a new relationship can happen. Just turn your creativity homeward.
