Put A Smile Inside Author: Bill McGrane
I want you to think about something. Smiling! What is it? What does it do? Do you really know about the power of a smile? You are walking down the street on a balmy afternoon, and a complete stranger smiles at you ... how do you feel? Someone you haven't seen in years walks up to you, smiles, and grabs your hand. How do you feel? You look in the mirror and frown at yourself and say what a lousy day it is going to be! How do you feel?
SEEING IS BELIEVING!
"A single picture is worth a thousand words!" When is the last time you heard that? Do you know how true it is? What you see and how you reinforce that vision with thoughts is what makes the experience of life pleasant, so-so, or downright miserable. A smile is an emotional bridge. This type of bridge is something our emotions create based on past experiences. A smile is an association with past pleasant experiences ... so we have a tendency to automatically feel good when someone smiles at us. Our mind automatically makes the association and the past pleasant experience is actually relived. When you frowned at yourself in the mirror, what you see set your emotional bridges into action, and you begin to relive all the emotions attached to that emotional bridge. When was the last time you intentionally dropped a bowling ball on your foot? Why do it with your emotional bridges?
WHAT IS REALITY?
Reality is whatever you want it to be! Believe me, you really are in control of this part of your life! You have often heard the old test of attitude ..... "Do you see the glass as half-full, or half-empty?". Well, "How do you see your life? As half-full, or half-empty?" How often have you had someone say to you, "You should have done it this way!", or, "You ought to be doing something else, or, "You must not be thinking straight!". Should, ought, and must are words that usually mean someone thinks our choices, behaviors, and values are incorrect. They are emotional bridges that make us frown to ourselves. Remember how that feels? Do you want to live by someone else's point of view?
SMILE AT YOURSELF!
Be your own best friend! Support yourself the way you want others to support you! Talk to yourself as a friend! Look in the mirror each morning and say hello to yourself. As a child I was told a story about a shoemaker who was befriended by a magical person. Because of the shoemaker's kindness, the magical person gave him a gift of enormous importance. The gift? It was one of the most powerful gifts that anyone could give to anyone else, it was the gift of purpose. The first thing the shoemaker did the next day would be his prime purpose for the whole day. What did the shoemaker do with his gift. Well, he decided he wanted to count money. He thought by the end of the day he would be enormously wealthy. So, the first thing he did the next day was to clean out the boxes where he kept his vegetables, because he knew he would need the boxes to keep all his money together. And that was all he did the rest of the day ....clean out boxes! Smile at yourself and say hello first, don't be like the shoemaker and spend the rest of your day sad.
THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE ... MAKE IT A GOOD ONE!
Starting over is never easy, but what else are you going to do anyway? If you want the outcomes of your life to be different, then you are going to have to have the courage to make some changes. Go for it! Encourage yourself! Trade the words should, ought, and must ... with need, want, and consider. Test these words on yourself first, and then notice how others respond to your new vocabulary. You can only give what you have! If you don't have a smile inside, then how can you have a smile outside. Put a smile inside you the first thing everyday!
