Ask Your Customers the Right Questions

If you let them, your customers will tell you what you need to know to make them happy, sell them your product or service, or just build rapport. It's all in asking the right kinds of questions.

Here's THREE TIPS that even experienced sales professionals and business owners sometimes overlook:

1. Open the floodgates:

Ask broad, open-ended questions that allow customers to tell you what you need to know. They'll appreciate the opportunity to express opinions and feelings and explain the problems they face. Avoid questions that get simple yes or no responses.

Example: Instead of "Do you have problems withˇ¦?" ask "What does this mean to you?"

More great open-ended questions start with "How do you feel aboutˇ¦?" What do you think of ˇ¦?" and "What's your experience withˇ¦?"

To clarify your understanding of a customer's issues, try asking, "Can you share with me an example of that?"

To learn more about how your potential customer currently buys, ask, "What similar products are you using now?" or "How would you go about selecting a replacement?"

2. Drop a reference.

In your questions, include any information you've already gathered on the customer about their business, their profession, etc. Doing your research shows that you are committed to understanding his or her needs or issues.

3. Nail down the specifics.

Ask customers to envision a best-case scenario, and then ask how much they would be willing to pay to get there.
