Do the Right Thing

In high school I had a political science teacher named Ms. Roberts. She used to always say, “do the right thing!” Maybe she wanted to make sure we were all prepared for class and had our homework completed on time, but that simple statement has stuck with me today.

What is the right thing to do? Does it mean we should treat others the way we would want to be treated? Does it mean we should keep our promises? Should we respect ourselves? Should we be on time to our jobs and activities? I believe we all know what the right thing to do is in most situations. When we don’t act according to our best purposes maybe its because we aren’t clear on our motivations.

I work in the jewelry business. My primary motivation is happy customers. I find pleasure when a customer leaves happy. I am sure most of you find that same pleasure in your jobs. This is what we expect of each other in business. If we don’t receive it we go somewhere we will find it.

A lot of the challenge in life and business is effective communication. Who was it who said we have two ears and one month for a reason? It helps in our relationships when we listen twice as much as we talk. It certainly feels a lot better to talk to someone who listens, understands, and sends us positive feedback.

Conversation and sales is identifying needs and filling them. In interpersonal conversation we all have a message to get across and we are also selling an idea to the other person. I find the better I listen the more a customer will self-disclose and make it easier to help them. An active listener builds trust in a relationship. If you treat people the way you want to be treated you can’t go wrong!
This conversation process brings us into a solution-oriented problem- solving environment. It also involves putting other people’s needs ahead of ours. This is the way to live!

We all want to be happy. This is the basic motivation for everyone. When we are happy we are kind to others and can best express our God given talents. This is the natural harmony and is the human spirits collective movement to make this world a better place. There is serenity to life when we are happy. Let’s make Ms. Roberts proud of us and “do the right thing!”
