Relax in Your Own Time and Space !
Author: Linda Scamons

Everyone looks forward to the holidays in the hope of finding relaxation and new experiences. It is surprising, however that many people cannot forget their work when the holiday begins! I know because my friends and I have complained about this in the past. When visiting a cathedral, a castle or even walking on the beach it is a natural response for a teacher to view the situation as an educational visit. This brings to mind a coach party of 70 children and 9 adults all carrying bags and packed lunches!

I have discovered 2 methods to help me to relax and to unwind from my usual routine. Believe me, they really work and I hope you will find my information a help to you.

Method 1. Relaxation Exercises for the Head and Neck.

Sit in a comfortable chair preferably one that does not support the head and neck. Close your eyes. Sit quietly and concentrate on listening to your own quiet rhythmical breathing for a few moments. Listen to the noises around you and outside, be aware of them now so that you can then forget about them for the remainder of the exercises. Again concentrate on your own quiet breathing. Slowly rotate your head all the way round. From the front round to the right side, then to the back, round to the left and back to the centre. Repeat this exercise in the same direction, slowly and gently. This time rotate your head in the opposite direction. First to the left then to the back, round to the right and back to the centre. Slowly and gently. Repeat this exercise in the same direction. Now concentrate once again on your breathing, quiet and rhythmical. Now let your head drop forward as far as it will go, letting your chin rest on your chest. Pushing your head forward, and feeling the tension in the back of your neck. Hold. Lift your head back to its normal position. Push your head back as far as it will go, feel the tension in the front of the neck. Hold. Lift your head back to its normal position. Again push your head forward, pushing the chin down on to your chest. Feel the tension in the back of your neck. Hold. Lift your head back to its normal position. Now push your head back as far as it will go. Feel the tension in the front of the neck. Hold. Lift the head back to its normal position. Now push your head down to the right shoulder, without moving the shoulder. Feel the tension in the left side of the neck. Hold. Let the head return to its normal position. Push the head down towards your left shoulder, again try not to let the shoulder come up to meet it. Feel the tension in the right side of the neck. Hold. Push your head down towards the right shoulder again. Hold. Lift the head back to its normal position. Push your head down towards your left shoulder. Hold. Return the head to its normal position. Again for a few seconds concentrate on your normal quiet breathing. Lift your shoulders up towards your ears as far as they will go. Feel the tension in your shoulders and upper back. Hold. Let your shoulders drop back down again. Again lift your shoulders up towards your ears as far as possible. Hold. Now let them drop back down again. And relax. Pull your shoulders forward as far as they will go. Feeling the tension in the muscles of the back and shoulders. Hold. Now relax. Again pull shoulders forward as far as possible. Hold. Now relax. Open your jaw as wide as you can without being uncomfortable. Hold. And relax. Again open the jaw as far as you can (comfortably). Hold. And relax. Wrinkle up the muscles of the nose. Feel the tension in the upper lip nose and eyes. Hold. And relax. Again wrinkle up the nose. Hold. And relax. Screw up your eyes as tightly as possible. Feel the tension in the eyelids and around the eyes. Hold. And relax. Again screw up the eyes. Hold. Now relax. Raise your eyebrows as high as possible. Feeling the tension in your eyelids, eyebrows and forehead. Hold. And relax. Again raise your eyebrows as high as possible. Hold. And relax. Now gently turn your head to look to the right. Feel the tension in the muscles of the neck. Hold. And relax. Turn your head to look to the left. Feeling the tension in the muscles of your neck. Hold. And relax. Turn to the right. Hold. And relax. Turn to the left. Hold. And relax. Now slowly and gently rotate your head round. From the front, to the side, to the back, to the side and back to the front. Repeat, rotating head in the opposite direction. Slowly and gently. Sit for a few moments and concentrate on each of the muscle groups in turn, and check for tension within them. Think of your shoulders and upper back. Let them relax more and feel comfortable. Think of your neck let the muscles relax more. Think of the muscles of your face, jaw, nose, eyes, eyebrows and forehead. Allow them to relax more and more. Sit a little while and all the muscles in the head and neck relax more and more. Let all the tension flow away. I hope you enjoyed these exercises. My next method of relaxation is very different but it certainly has a lot to offer.

Method 2. Let Someone Else Do The Talking!

I carry a small cassette player in my pocket and 1 or 2 cassette tapes of informative ideas. I find these to be extremely useful and stimulating mentally. My mind is focussed on important subjects I know will be of great value now and in the future. We never stop learning because the events around us change so quickly and we need to respond to these changes. I use audio cassettes produced by the Future-World Corporation. The Corporation is registered with Dallas County and the State of Texas as an international information marketing company. All transactions by and between Future World and its customers or Communicators will be governed by the laws of the State of Texas. The list of available audio tapes and books is extensive and I recommend that you look at their online catalog to see which products would be the ones you need.
