Thought is the First Level of Creation
Author: Dyanne Wilson

"You may believe that you are responsible for what you do, but not for what you think. The truth is that you are responsible for what you think, because it is only at this level that you can exercise choice. What you do comes from what you think." ACIM Chpt 2/Vi2

NLP is the study of how we think. It is about becoming aware of our thought patterns and bringing it to a conscious level in order to have more choice about what is going on between our ears. Thinking in NLP though is not simply hinking...distinctions are made. More specifically, how are we thinking? Are we thinking in pictures, sounds and/or feelings? Or what combination of pictures, sounds and feelings are we using when thinking? What is the quality of the picture/sound and feeling.

If I were to ask you about your car, what would you first think of? Would you see a picture of your car and want to describe the color and type or would you first hear of the sounds of your engine purring? Perhaps, you might think of how soft the upholstery is and how it feels to drive.

NLP has a variety of techniques that shows us how to change our thoughts by altering the qualities of our thoughts. For example, if you notice a thought which you perceive to be negative and would rather not have, you might become aware of the qualities of that thought (visual, auditory or kinesthetic - VAK). What exactly is that thought comprised of? Is it is a huge panoramic 3D colour moving picture? If so, it might be a good idea to shrink it to the size of a postage stamp after changing it to a black and white still picture. If you are satisfied with the learnings of the thought, then imagine the delight of chucking it (the unwanted thoughts and how they are represented) into a wastebasket.

There is no need to continue feeling bad…On the other hand if we notice that our pleasant thoughts are the size of a black and white postage stamp, and hardly noticeable, we might consider blowing it up into a panaromic, 3D, fully associated (meaning like being in the picture- as opposed to just looking at it) lifesize vivid picture including all the sounds, feelings, smells and tastes. Notice all of the wondrous feelings that that produce. And call up this memory often! We often do the reverse.

You might be wondering why you should try to feel better when clearly your circumstances (or how you perceive it) require you to feel bad. Gregg Braden says in The Isaiah Effect that it is proven "...at least under certain conditions, that thought and emotion produce feeling, and that feeling produces the vibratory patterns that affect our world. As we change the quality of our feeling, we change the pattern of the vibration thus shifting patterns of our outer world."This means by focusing on what is good in your life, what you are grateful for, blow them up into panoramic proportions with all your senses (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, tastes and smells) and revel in them... You will feel better, be more resourceful, vibrate at a higher level and attract more positive experiences. This is work, I know but we must be vigilant about what we are thinking and focusing our attention on (until it becomes natural) for this is where we have choice.
