A student from rather humble beginnings worked hard to put himself through college. Prior to one of his final exams, the professor announced that the student with the highest grade on the exam would be offered an Assistant Professor position at the college. Desperate for a good paying job, it seemed like a dream come true for the student.
He arrived late for the exam, his part-time job on that particular day, causing an unavoidable delay. His professor, understanding his dilemma, handed him the exam, consisting of five math problems on the front side of the page, and two on the back. The professor explained that he was to take the test home, work on it over the weekend, and leave it on the professor¡¯s desk on Monday morning.
Bringing the exam to his room, the student made quick work of the five problems on the front side of the page and turned to the remaining two problems on the back. Hour after hour he worked diligently trying to solve these seemingly impossible last two problems. Each time he was tempted to give-up, he thought of the professor¡¯s job offer. He believed that at least one person in his class had solved these two problems and if he did not, that other person would get the job. If someone else could do it, so could he! Continuing on late into Friday evening, all day, and into the night on Saturday, he finally solved the first problem! Quickly turning his attention to the second problem, it too succumbed to his persistence and tenacity. Joyous at completing his exam, he turned the test in and went to work Monday.
Monday evening came. Our erstwhile student, who was engaged in his studies, heard a knock at his door, and bursting in without waiting to be invited, was his rather excited professor! ¡°Unbelievable! It can¡¯t be true! You really did it!¡± exclaimed his teacher. ¡°You solved the two problems on the back of the exam!¡± Perplexed, the student asked, ¡°of course I did. Wasn¡¯t I supposed to?¡± ¡°No!¡± answered the professor. ¡°I had told the rest of the students in the class that these problems had never been solved. I provided them simply as brain teasers, never intending for someone to actually solve them! You were unaware because you missed the beginning of the class!¡± Quite surprised, the student had realized the enormity of what he had accomplished! He had actually accomplished the impossible!
It¡¯s staggering what we can do when no one bothers to tell us that we¡¯ll fail¡¦
The power of positive expectations is the power to succeed. The power of pessimism is the power to fail.
The above story comes from Dr Schuler¡¯s Audio Tape series, ¡°Power Thoughts¡±. An outstanding tape program!
