WHY WOMEN MUST NO LONGER SETTLE Author: Cathy Garger, Personal Certified Coach
Many women are now going through challenging times fraught with upheavals of life as we know it. I’m not sure what, exactly, is going on… Is it the economy, or the state of affairs around the globe? Is it the media that has, in rapid speed, expanded our "real" world, giving us perhaps more courage to be who we "real-ly" are? Could it be that in our post 9/11 world, we’re making each day count a little bit more than we used to? Or is it simply that most of the women I know are “coming of age”, coming into their own, becoming their “own persons“ like never before?
Regardless of the underlying factors or causes, the fact remains that women are changing and evolving in a way I never would have thought possible thirty years ago. Maybe it's something in the air or the water, but one thing's for certain. We're now looking at life lately in entirely new ways.
We don't have far to look to see examples of countless women who are refusing to “settle” anymore. We no longer tolerate disrespect nor inconsideration on the part of our partners or family (or actually, from anyone); nor do we tolerate harassment or put-downs at work. We are making choices that are better for us personally, and no longer are we settling to play Donna Reed nor Superwomen as our lot in life (unless, of course, that is what we most desire). We've discovered that playing the victim or martyr is simply no longer useful nor productive, and we have woken up to realize that it is our birthright to go out and create any kind of life we want.
As a whole, we’re expressing our genuine selves in many different ways. We're now discovering that what we used to think of as nice, fun things to do when we have "extra" time (like going to the gym, learning to sail, hanging out with friends, or attending classes for the sheer joy of learning)are not nice, but necessary. We acknowledge our need to nourish our souls, re-kindle our passions, and expand our horizons. We’re learning that making choices with respect to what is good for us is not just a "good thing" to do ~ but is instead one of the fundamentals of good mental health.
And increasingly, we're claiming more power and displaying more assertiveness than ever before. We think nothing of arguing with a school principal, questioning a physician's diagnosis, or asking exactly what we are eating in a restaurant. We realize that we don't need to pay a bit of attention to even well-meaning family members who disagree with our lifestyles. We refuse to obey without question, and we keep a self-protective eye open for anyone who wants to keep us under his/her thumb. Being used is no longer okay any more than is handling all the domestic chores by ourselves. We're more choosy about whowe let enter into our inner circles, and we now decide to "keep" only those who encourage us to use our minds, hearts, and souls to live our very best lives.
What a far cry from the days when we were small and we actually heard that the male is the "head of the household," the "king of his castle", and that "a woman's place is in the home." (I've often wondered if women were the ones to coin these phrases? Somehow, I think not). We've taken the best from women of previous generations and created a life which better reflects who we really are today. Less like to “settle” for just anything, we have arrived at the age of full maturity and accountability. With very few exceptions, we realize we can accomplish virtually anything we want, and that we have the power ~ and ability ~ to make a significant impact on this world.
Women today are proud of their accomplishments achieved on their own merits, and we're taking responsibility for our lives, like never before. So many of us are finally realizing that listening carefully to our own instincts that tell us what we need most is the only way to conduct our lives. For it is only when we know what we need, claim and exercise our ability and power to get these needs met, and refuse to "settle" for anything less...that all other parts of our lives can then fall into place.
